Chennai – The City
The International Congress will be conducted in Chennai, the largest city in South India and the fourth largest in the country. The British influence on the city is most evident in the various cathedrals, buildings in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, wide tree lined avenues. The varied aspects of traditional South Indian culture exist alongside the lifestyle of a modern city complete with its plush hotels and restaurants. Chennai is one of the frontier industrial cities in India with several large, medium and small scale engineering industries, and numerous academic and research Institutions.
Kamaraj National and Anna International Airports are situated at Tirusulam about 20 Kms from city. Chennai is easily accessible from various parts of India and the world. All major international airlines operate their flights to Chennai. A number of direct flights operate to and from Chennai on a daily basis from the American and European continents besides the Middle East and Far East countries. For domestic travelers, there are direct flights to all destinations in India from Chennai. Eight airlines operate their domestic flights from the Kamaraj National Terminal. Chennai is connected by rail with all major towns and cities in India. The main railway stations in Chennai are Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore. A good network of roads connects Chennai with all important places in Tamil Nadu and many cities in South India.
Both Government and Private bus operators ply state-of-the-art buses from Chennai to these places. The public transport in Chennai run by the State Transport Corporation is outstanding. Besides delegates can hire call-taxis, autos and other means of conveyance right from their places of stay and the venue of the Conference. There is no traffic congestion and traffic hold-up is a rarity.
